I'm curious as to why you decided to go from Gentoo to Debian. I'm guessing you're trying to avoid unnecessary compilations, but if that's so, why not just reinstall at a stage-3? Don't you find that keeping your system reasonably current (even from unstable) requires too many 3rd party apt-sources to bother with? Maybe you don't care as much as I do about currency. Just curious.
Not only do I save time by not compiling packages, but the packages themselves tend to interoprate better, and don't require me to choose which features I want a priori. For example, when compiling PHP I don't have to choose whether or not I want MySQL support. Someone has already compiled it ahead of time and all these modules can be added as packages. In addition, I really like the stability offered by Debian for my servers. It's very nice to have everything be completely consistent across all system.
No, I don't typically draw on too many apt sources. For my machines running "Woody", I rely on the Debian proper repositories, Backports.org, and sometimes Dotdeb.org. For testing/unstable systems I only require a source for Mplayer/Lame and one for MythTV on boxes with this software. This keeps things pretty simple and I get 99.9% of the software I need from these few sources. |
